The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
